Pool Features Worth It in the Havasu Heat

The short answerIn Havasu the pool is used hardest at night and in the shoulder seasons, so the features worth paying for are shade, lighting, water features you can hear from the patio, a spa you can heat for winter, and decking that stays comfortable underfoot.

Start with shade

The Havasu sun decides how much you use the backyard. A deep covered patio next to the pool turns a midday furnace into a place you actually sit. Our own backyard at 6269 Avienda De Las Colinas has a 1,177 sf covered rear patio and a covered upper deck, so the backyard stays usable at midday.

Plan for night swimming

Summer evenings are when Havasu backyards come alive. Pool and landscape lighting, a fire feature and outdoor audio make the backyard a second living room after the sun goes down.

Water features you can hear

Sheer descents and waterfalls look great in photos, but the real reason to add them is the sound from the patio. We have built sheer descents at 6873 Avienda De Los Foothills and a raised spa spilling into the pool at 6287 Avienda De Las Colinas.

Heat the spa, plan for the heating bill

Winters are mild, but pool water still gets cold. Several of our pools and spas are heated on propane, which makes the spa usable all winter. Heating a pool is a real line item, so decide up front how much of the year you want to swim, not just soak.

A cold plunge

A cold plunge beside the spa turns the backyard into a hot-and-cold recovery setup. 6269 has one next to its champagne-edge spa.

Decking and landscape that work in the heat

Lighter-colored pavers stay cooler under bare feet than dark surfaces, and artificial turf gives the kids and dogs some green without a water bill. Desert landscaping finishes it without much upkeep.
