RV Garage Additions in Lake Havasu: What to Know Before You Build

The short answerWhether an RV garage addition works comes down to your lot: setbacks, slope, access for a trailer, and your HOA's design rules. If the lot allows it, an addition can give an existing home the same deep, tall bays we build into new ones.

Start with the lot, not the floor plan

Before anyone draws a garage, walk the lot with these questions:

  • Setbacks. How close to the property lines the city and your HOA let you build.
  • Access. Whether you can swing a truck and trailer into the new bay from the street or driveway.
  • Slope and soil. A sloped lot may need grading or retaining walls before a slab can go in.
  • Height. A 14-foot RV door means a taller structure, which HOA design review will look at closely.

Size it for the rig you will own next

Use the same rule we use for new homes: measure your longest rig nose to tail, tow included, and add room to walk around it. Our guide on how deep an RV garage should be walks through typical lengths for boats, toy haulers and side-by-sides.

Build it like the rest of the house

An addition should match the home and last as long. We use the same standards as our new builds: 3,000 psi concrete, rebar-matted slabs and a 10-mil vapor barrier under the foundation. It is also the time to add what you will want later: power where the boat charges, air conditioning, lighting, and a hose bib or a garage bathroom for washing down.

Plans, permits and HOA approval

An addition needs engineered plans, a city permit and, in most Havasu neighborhoods, HOA design approval. We prepare the plans and take them through both, so you are not the one trading emails with the review committee.

Watching from out of state?

Many owners are not here full time. We send photo and video updates through each stage of the build, so you can see the slab, the walls and the doors go in from wherever you are.
